From one crew to another... B-17's flew deep into occupied Europe, often without the aid of long range fighter escort until late in the war. As such, they were dependent on one another and flew in tight stacked defensive box formations to bring maximum defensive firepower onto attacking Axis aircraft. Here a pilot from "Texas Raiders" glances at the B-17G "Chuckie" which sits on the flight line in the afternoon sun. The B-17 pictured here originally began its service career as a pathfinder aircraft after being built by Lockheed Vega. Its combat service record is unknown after delivery, but it eventually ended up stateside as an electronics test bed and cargo aircraft before being restored back to its WWII military configuration. This matted color print of a B-17 Flying Fortress and onlooking pilot is from a Warpaint, LLC original photograph.
