The B-17G was the final variant in the long and illustrious line of B-17 Flying Fortresses produced during WWII. Over 12,700 were produced under the US Army serial number system alone (excluding Navy and RAF models). With a crew of 10, the aircraft served distinctively in the air war in Europe and to a lesser extent in the Pacific. The solitary B-17G Flying Fortress in this print stands as a silent testament to the distinguished contribution these aircraft and their aircrews made toward winning the war. Sadly, today only a handful of these rugged aircraft remain, most being cut up for scrap right after the war. A few lived on, however, and found new lives as cargo aircraft, water bombers for fire fighting and test platforms. Today, only about 10 - 15 still exist in airworthy condition, most of which have been restored back to their original WWII configurations by aviation museums.
